CONNECT! (Pre-school through Grade 5)
Children’s Ministry Mission: Celebrate spirituality with wonder! Children are naturally spiritual beings and every day theologians. We want children to recognize and name this spirituality found within themselves and in all the world around them.
Components of Celebrate Wonder:
- Spiritual Practice – intentional activity or ritual that helps you be aware of God’s presence. Simple and tangible practices to connect with God’s love
- Peaceful Place – space for children to spend quiet time with God
- Wonder Table – similar to an altar, a holy space meant to help the children see and know God is present – used as a gathering area for the story time and for participating in spiritual practices
- Wonder Box – special place to hold a special item that connects to the Faith Word and to the Bible story. The Wonder Box is very special and is kept on the Wonder Table. Each week we reveal what’s inside and discuss it’s importance.
Children start out in the 9 am worship service, then they are released to their classes. On the first Sunday of the month, they remain in worship with their parents.

Chelsea First Social Justice Class
It’s fall and that means it’s time to get back to it! The United Way’s Equity Challenge sparked good discussions, challenged what we thought we knew, and encouraged us to be the change.
So where do we go from here? Let’s gather Sunday, Oct. 2 at 10:15 am in the LL Conf. Room to talk about which direction to go this year. What social justice issues are you involved with? What would you like to learn more about? What active steps can we take to make a difference in our church, communities, state, or world?
Men’s Fellowship – 2022 Conversations and Reflections Series.
The men’s group meets on the third Saturday of the month from 8 – 9:30 am. Light breakfast and snacks are provided.

Music Ministries…exalting and experiencing Christ
The Music Ministry at Chelsea First exists so that teams and individuals have an opportunity to serve God with the gifts they have been given in music and the creative arts. A wide genre of music, including traditional and new hymns, anthems, service music, contemporary praise music choruses, and gospel music, is used in order to glorify God. Colossians 3.16 really sums it up… Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
The choir regularly participates in leading worship on Sunday morning for the 11 am service from September thru May. There are other opportunities throughout the year for this group to participate in as well, including the Hometown Holidays Concert, Christmas Eve Candlelight Celebration, and other special events.
If you are high school age or over and are willing to commit to rehearsals and performances as much as possible. Sharing God’s love through music and testimony, enjoying fellowship, fun, and praise with other members, are all part of belonging to the choir. Rehearsals are from (September thru May) at 7:00 pm on Wednesdays in the Choir Room and in the Sanctuary at 10:15 am on Sundays. Anyone interested in joining the choir should contact Randy Umfleet, Director of Music Ministries.
Rezound Handbell Choir
Ringing 5 octaves of handbells and 5 octaves of hand chimes, The Rezound Handbell Choir under the direction of Randy Umfleet, participates in the 11 am worship service monthly, September thru May and for special services throughout the year. Prior ringing experience is not required, but the music-reading ability would be helpful. The Rezound Handbell Choir rehearses on Sundays (September thru May), 12 noon to 1:00 pm, in the Handbell Room. Anyone interested in joining the Rezound Handbell choir should contact Randy Umfleet, Director of Music Ministries.
The following musical groups are currently rehearsing September thru May in-person following CDC guidelines:
Choir – Wednesdays 7:00pm-8:30pm
Rezound! Handbell Ensemble – Sundays 12.00pm-1.00pm
All other musical groups are currently on hold due to COVID-19. Please check back for updates about musical opportunities.

Chelsea First will be hosting a warmth drive from Sunday, October 2 – Sunday, November 6. We will be collecting new winter coats and sleeping bags for children and youth. The Detroit Public School System estimates that 7,000 of their students are homeless or without heat in their homes. The winter coats and sleeping bags we collect will be given to Detroit Public Schools for immediate distribution.
A collection box will be placed in the main entrance area of Chelsea First UMC. Please spread the word. Let’s do our best to assist those in need.
A group of five individuals from Chelsea First worked to assist a family in need living in Jackson two weeks ago. The bathroom was mold infested, leaks had caused the wood to rot rendering the young families only restroom unusable. The flooring, tub/shower surround, toilet, sink/vanity, and plumbing was replaced, The family has now returned to their home.
Chelsea First is very thankful for all the support given by the congregation and for the volunteers who went on the mission trip. They started the flooring and framing for a garage the God’s Country Coop will use for new programs they are starting.
Safe Sanctuary Policy
Chelsea First United Methodist Church believes that all persons are significant to the growth of God’s kingdom and should have the opportunity to worship, learn, and serve in various capacities to ensure personal growth and growth of others. We seek to provide an environment that is physically, emotionally and spiritually safe for all persons who enter our doors, especially children and youth. We seek to provide a safe environment in which opportunities for abuse are minimized through proper enlistment and supervision of those persons working with them.
All volunteers and employees who are in leadership roles in these ministries are living out the vow church members take during baptisms to nurture our children and youth in the Christian faith. Every church worker plays a key role in fostering the spiritual development of individuals and families in our church community. Our goal is to strive to be a “Safe Sanctuary” where we can work hand-in-hand growing our children and youth in their faith and a life devoted to Christ. We ask all volunteers and staff in a leadership role to take a Safe Gatherings Training.
If you are a volunteer who has not yet completed the volunteer screening and Safe Gatherings training, please contact Susan Adam-Rita, Director of Children’s Ministries or Jeanne Franks, Director of Youth Ministires to set up a training.
Youth and Children Forms
Chelsea First United Methodist Church requires two forms to be completed in order for youth to participate in Church activities:
All youth and children must have a current REGISTRATION FORM on file at the church. This form needs to be completed once per school year.
All youth and children must have a PERMISSION FORM on file prior to each event. The Permission Form must be completed and signed by a Parent/Guardian.
