Event Series Event Series: Faith In Action Collection

Faith In Action Collection

April 7

Barbara Brown has recognized a need in our community and needs our help!  Here is some information from Sarah Shugart from Faith in Action.

ALICE is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.  There are families earning above the federal poverty level but are struggling to maintain basic expenses.  The percentage of families in this category in the Chelsea area is 45%.  FIA uses 200% of the federal poverty level because of the cost of living in western Washtenaw County.  Using this metric as our threshold for eligibility for services, we can include area families that fall into the ALICE category.

Our pantry is the busiest it has been in our history.  Maintaining a fully stocked pantry is essential to alleviating financial challenges these families face.  Every time a family of three shops in our pantry, they receive about $100 in groceries.  This savings on food allows them to direct those funds elsewhere.  We need everyone’s help in stocking our pantry to help our neighbors.

Here is how does Chelsea compare with other cities/towns in our county as determined by ALICE:

City of Ypsi: 68%
Ypsi Township: 49%
Ann Arbor: 43%
Superior Township: 40%

All other locations are below 40%

Now here is how you can help:

  • Bring in household products and paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, dish soap, cleaning products, etc.)
  • Place your items in the big blue bin located in the lobby.

Our first collection date will be April 7.  We will be collecting these products the first Sunday of each month.  Faith in Action thanks you, Chelsea First thanks you and the people of the community of Chelsea thank you!
