Our Church Community
Chelsea First United Methodist Church (Chelsea First) is a Christ-centered congregation with a positive, open, and engaging spirit. We believe God’s family has room for ALL people, and invite members of our community to embark on their own journeys as disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We are a church for everyone, at all seasons of life. Chelsea First brings a grounded, engaged, and supportive approach to Christian worship while working passionately toward making a positive impact in our community. We’re glad you’re here!
Our Church History
Over a century and a half of Christian dedication in the heart of Chelsea
The Methodist Episcopal Church of Chelsea was organized in 1853 and was served by traveling clergy from Ann Arbor. By 1859, the congregation had built a church on the current Park Street site. The first minister who served the church on a regular basis was B.I. Ives. Just after the Civil War, in 1866, a parsonage was constructed next to the church. The congregation grew to more than 50 members during this time.
In January, 1899, the wooden church building burned to the ground. The church was rebuilt as the current stone structure in thirteen months. The dedication of the stone edifice was in February, 1900, with the dedication sermon preached by Rev. I.B. Ives, who had led the congregation in 1859.
As the community of Chelsea grew and flourished, so did our congregation. By 1939, membership had grown to more than 300 persons. World War II was a huge disruption in the lives of the people of Chelsea and of the church. After the war, the congregation continued to grow. By the late 1950’s, the congregation numbered more than 500 and had clearly outgrown the stone church built in 1899. The solution was the current Educational Wing, begun in 1959 and dedicated in 1963.
During 1982, our congregation focused on the future ministry of the church. A decision was made to remain committed to the present site and serve as a vital witness in the downtown Chelsea community. In 1992, construction began on the main entrance, elevator, coatroom and restrooms. The growth and energy of the congregation gave momentum for the building of the Shairer Wing, including Grams Hall. Those facilities were opened in 1996.
In 2014 the Restore – Renew – Reach Out Campaign was started to gain pledges from the congregation to perform extensive remodel and repairs to our aging Sanctuary. And thanks to the generosity of members, these repairs were completed in 2015.
Now, in the 21st Century, Chelsea First United Methodist Church has a growing ministry of music, missional outreach, and spiritual growth opportunities for all ages. We have great hope as we look to the future!
Leadership Board Meeting Agendas and Minutes
Leadership Board will host retreat, town hall in August
Members of the Chelsea First’s Leadership Board are making final plans for their annual planning retreat in August and the congregation town hall that will follow.
Next steps were outlined and confirmed during the Leadership Board’s July 8 meeting. The Rev. Melanie Carey, Chelsea First’s consultant in the simplified accountable structure of church governance, attended the meeting to observe and assist with plans for the retreat.
The all-day retreat is scheduled for Aug. 5 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Chelsea. Among the items to be addressed during the retreat are:
- A review of the past year, including mission outreach, by Chelsea First.
- Goal setting for the year ahead.
- Refinement of overall objectives for Chelsea First.
- Identification of spiritual development and leadership development needs for leadership board members.
The Aug. 17 congregational town hall is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in the social hall. Leadership Board members will share initial thoughts on goals for the coming year developed during the retreat and seek feedback and input from the congregation.
During the July 8 meeting, Nolan Peterson shared research and thought on why attending church matters during the time for spiritual formation. He said there are many reasons for why people attend worship services and other church events: to meet people; out of obligation; to be a part of a faith community; to provide a faith base for their children; to become a better person; to grow closer to God. Small group discussions followed.
The Rev. Joy Barrett led the leadership development time with information on how best to respond to concerns from church members. She shared an effective outline:
- Paraphrase the complaint to be sure you understand it clearly.
- Ask if the complaint has been shared with the person who is the subject of the complaint. If not, encourage the complainant to do so.
- If the complainant is reluctant to talk with the subject of the complaint, offer to go with them.
- If still unwilling to talk directly to the subject of the complaint, offer to share the complaint with the Leadership Board, but only if the complainant is willing to share their name. Anonymous complaints should not be shared.
- Work to resolve the issue; be hard on issues and soft on people.
- Remember that conflict is not always a bad thing.
Among other items addressed during the July Leadership Board meeting:
- Monthly consent agenda items were approved unanimously. These items include the minutes of the June meeting and the May consolidated financial report.
- There were three guests attending the meeting.
Because of the planning retreat and the town hall, there will be no regular Leadership Board meeting in August. The next regular meeting will be Sept. 9, 6:30-8 p.m. in Room 207. Meetings are open to the public.
Approved 2025 Board meeting minutes:
January 14 – Leadership Board meeting minutes
February 11 – Leadership Board meeting minutes
March 11 – Leadership Board meeting minutes
April 8 – Leadership Board meeting minutes

Guiding Principles
The Leadership Board for Chelsea First has unanimously approved the “guiding principles” that will broadly guide how the church will operate as it moves closer to full implementation of the simplified accountable structure adopted in in 2024.
The guiding principles, say, in part that Chelsea First is a “vibrant, intentionally inclusive, justice-seeking faith congregation.”
The guiding principles are the permission-giving policies, procedures and practices that protect and allow the ministry of the church to function on a day-to-day basis within healthy boundaries. They outline areas of responsibility for the Leadership Board as well as key areas of local church operations.
Adopting the guiding principles by May was one of the initial goals adopted by the Leadership Board for the first year under the streamlined simplified accountable structure for church operations.

Understanding the SAS Model Rotation in the UMC
In the United Methodist Church’s Simplified, Accountable Structure (SAS) model, leadership board members typically serve three-year terms in a rotating pattern. Here’s how it works:
-
Board members are divided into “classes” (e.g., Class of 2024, Class of 2025, Class of 2026).
-
Each year, one “class” rotates off the board, and a new group of leaders is elected.
-
This ensures continuity (experienced leaders remain) and fresh perspectives (new members bring new ideas).
-
The goal is to provide stability, accountability, and clear decision-making for the church’s mission and ministry.
This model streamlines governance while empowering lay leadership to work efficiently and faithfully. If you’re interested in serving, have a question or comment, we’d love to hear from you!
About our staff

Joy Barrett
Senior Pastor
I am so grateful to serve as the pastor at Chelsea First. The Christ-like love and faithfulness of the people in this congregation continue to shape me as a person and a church leader. My husband, Rob Long, and I moved here in 2004; it is a joy and privilege to be part of this congregation and community. We enjoy walks in the woods, gardening, cooking, friends and family, and just being together.
The “great commandment” to love God with everything we have and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves is central for me as a Christ-follower.

Rodney Gasaway
Deacon
I was called into full time ministry 17 years ago. First as a missioner in inner city Detroit and now as ordained clergy serving two congregations. I love most aspects of professional ministry but my area of specialty is community engagement, missions, and outreach. I thrive on meeting individuals from all walks of life, listening to their stories, and sharing my own.
I am married with two adult sons and love camping, hiking, riding my motorcycle, and spending time with friends and family.

Susan Adam-Rita, Ph.D.
Director of Lifelong Faith Formation
It has been a true joy and honor to serve as the Director of Children’s Ministry at Chelsea First United Methodist Church since August 2020. Now, after five wonderful years of walking with our youngest disciples, I am excited to begin a new chapter as the Lifelong Faith Formation Director.
This new role is a natural extension of my passion for nurturing the spiritual growth of individuals and families—across all ages and stages of life. My commitment remains the same: to walk alongside this community as we deepen our faith, grow in love, and become more fully who God created us to be. I am dedicated to creating spaces and opportunities that foster wonder, connection, transformation, and belonging—all through an intergenerational, inclusive, and holistic approach to faith formation.
I grew up in a small city in southern Brazil, and today, I call Chelsea, MI, home—where I live with my wonderful husband and our lively teenage triplet boys, who definitely keep life interesting! I find joy in reading, taking walks in nature, and soaking in the rhythm of my family’s many sports and music activities.
With a professional background as a Licensed Counselor/Psychologist, I have long been fascinated by the inner life—how we grow, relate, and shape our sense of meaning and spirituality. This perspective deeply informs how I work with people of all ages, especially children, creating learning environments that are reflective, engaging, and soul-nurturing.
I’m thrilled to continue serving this vibrant, justice-seeking, and intentionally inclusive community of faith. And I look forward to growing together as we embrace a culture of lifelong discipleship—one that invites all generations into God’s ever-widening circle of grace and love.

Liza Gray-Jarvis
Office Manager
I have been on staff at Chelsea First since March of 2005. I enjoy the challenges and experiences of my job and feel very blessed to be a welcoming presence in the office. I have three grown children that I am extremely proud of and have two grandchildren. I love the outdoors, spending time on our boat, riding with my husband on our motorcycle, and spending time with family and friends.

Bill Ruddock
Finance Manager
I am pleased to be a part of the mission of Chelsea First United Methodist Church. My wife and I moved to Chelsea a little more than two years ago and we have grown to know and love this church. I have been involved in church leadershp, mostly in the Presyterian Church, since I was a teenager. I grew up in a small community similar to Chelsea in upstate New York but, I have lived my adult life in Michigan. My wife and I each have two adult children. I love to read, to sing, and to find ways to work towards a more just world. I look forward to serving this church to the best of my abilities.

Jody Croskey
Facilities Manager
Chelsea First UMC is not only my place of employment but it has also been my church home since 2016. I strive to ensure a safe and comfortable place to worship for all. I have lived in Chelsea with my husband, Robert, since 2001. We have two adult children: a daughter who lives here in Chelsea and a son who lives in Jackson.
In my spare time I love to attend Detroit Tigers and Red Wing games and watch the tv show “Survivor”. Someday I hope to be a contestant on the show. I also have a passion for volunteering, connecting with others and learning new things.

Randy Umfleet
Director of Music Ministry
I began serving as the Director of Music Ministries in November 2021 after previous music ministry leadership in variously sized churches for over 30 years, in Illinois, Michigan and Florida. I have many talents and am a versatile musician, conversant with classical, gospel, new Christian music and everything in-between. In addition to local church choral and instrumental music ensembles, I have organized and directed mass choirs, orchestras, and music theater events.
I earned two BAchelor of Art degrees: a BA in Christian Education-Church Music from Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, IL (emphases in vocal music and organ) and a BA in Music Education from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL (emphases in musical theater and organ). I completed my graduate work in Choral Conducting at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.
I have two adult children: a daughter and her family who live in Holt, MI and a son in Ann Arbor. In my leisure time I enjoy cooking and baking, attending musical theater performances and concerts, watching the BRAVO Television network, as well as travel.
My goal and mission are to implement exciting and meaningful music along with other elements of the arts into the life of the church to elevate corporate and private times of worship.

Tammy Melvin
Communications Coordinator
I’m so grateful to be part of this vibrant and welcoming congregation!
Before moving to Grass Lake with my husband, Jeff, I served as the secretary at Simpson UMC for over 20 years. Our move brought us closer to our three children and their families—a decision we cherish deeply.
When we found Chelsea First, I immediately knew I had discovered a place where I truly belong. I love being part of a forward-thinking and inclusive church that is so focused on being the hands and feet of Jesus in the world.
What I enjoy most about Chelsea First is the amazing people who make this church so special. I’m excited to contribute by helping share its programs, services, and the wonderful community we’ve built together.
