Chelsea First Mission Event: June 12 Work Day at Flint Freedom Schools Collaborative

Chelsea First’s Mission Team is delighted to be in partnership with the Flint Freedom Schools Collaborative. This group has held a 6-week academic enrichment camp for Flint kids since 2016. It was launched by an initiative of the United Methodist Church in response to the Flint water crisis, and has been housed in 3 UMC churches, serving 110 kids in grades K-12.

This summer, FFSC is asking Chelsea First to bring a team up to Flint on June 12, for a day of site preparation and decorating. What is especially exciting is that the work location will be at a new Freedom School site. Flint Community Schools has been so impressed with the FFSC model and results that they are supporting the addition of places for 100 new K-6 scholars, and will staff the location with school employees and house it within a school building. FFSC’s access to this site is limited, and they need all hands on deck to decorate and convert the spaces.

The expected agenda for the day is as follows:
 Meet at Chelsea First at 8:30 am, departing at about 8:45.
 Arrive Flint by 10am.
 Have a lunch break; participants will bring their own bag lunch.
 Work till about 4pm. Expected activities are mostly creating and placing decorations, but some carrying and moving of items may be helpful as well.
 Back at Chelsea First by 5:30pm.

About 17 people participated in a similar set-up day in 2024. What they especially enjoyed was interacting with the young adults who are the main leaders and teachers.
This year’s young teachers will be on board for the June 12 work day, so we can look forward to more delightful conversations.
