The Annual Hometown Holidays Concert will be on Sunday, December 8 with a 2 pm performance at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 6805 Mast Road in Dexter and a 7 pm performance at Chelsea First United Methodist Church, 128 Park Street in Chelsea.
This year’s concert will begin with the String Orchestra presenting Serenade by Carl Reinecke.
The second part of the concert will be the mass choir and orchestra presenting Ola Gjeilo’s “Sunrise Mass”
The concert will feature the talents Chelsea Chamber Players, the Chelsea High School String Orchestra and Concert Choir, the Chelsea First United Methodist Choir, and the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Choir. Bringing together the church choirs, the high school choir, the Chelsea Chamber Players and the high school string orchestra is always a joy, but the fact that it is an annual collaboration is something to treasure — it is a unique experience for everyone involved.
Gjeilo’s music is especially attractive to audiences and musicians due to its ethereal and atmospheric qualities, reminiscent of film scoring. In ‘Sunrise Mass,’ the words aren’t always as important as the soundscape itself, with frequent pairing of driving background rhythms with long sweeping melodies.
